Drake Maye had an extra pep in his step when walking to the conference room podium to address the media on Wednesday.

It was expected from the No. 3 overall pick of the 2024 NFL draft, a day after he learned he’d be starting at quarterback for the New England Patriots in Week 6 against the Houston Texans.

“I think it’s a great opportunity,” said Maye. “It’s something you dream of, getting your first start in the NFL. So I’m excited to be out there with those guys. Take advantage of having a full week to get prepared and try to put my best foot forward and help this team win.”

It’ll be a tough first start for Maye, who will be facing one of the best pass-rushing teams in the NFL on Sunday. The offensive line in New England is broken with multiple starters missing.

No one is expecting Maye to overcome everything in his first start. He’s going to make mistakes along the way, but he’s also the kind of quarterback willing to take the sort of risks Jacoby Brissett won’t with the football.

A young gunslinger won’t fix the offense, but he could make it significantly better.
