On Friday afternoon, Longhorns baseball had a reason to celebrate as they landed a commitment from Trey Rangel, the top-ranked pitcher in the 2026 class. The Colony High School product chose Texas over Texas A&M and Oklahoma State. His stock has been on the rise after a stellar 2023-2024 season.

In ten appearances as a Sophomore, Rangel posted a 0.90 ERA. He was able to keep opponents off balance with a unique three-pitch mix that should only improve. His arsenal includes a fastball that tops out at 94 miles per hour, a slider that can reach 81 miles per hour, and a changeup that reaches 83 miles per hour. The Longhorns’ pitching gets a welcome boost with him in the mix.

Although Rangel’s college debut is still months away, excitement is building for the future of Texas baseball. He joins a recruiting class that includes James Jorgensen, Trenton Maybin, and Phinn Waters. After hiring Jim Schlossnagle to replace David Pierce, the Longhorns have been busy on the recruiting trail.

On social media, Rangel did not hide his excitement about being a Longhorn. In a post on his X account, Rangel said, ” 100% committed. I am very thankful for everyone who has helped me get to this point. HOOK EM.”

While the Longhorns will continue to look for talent, Rangel’s addition is a significant win for the program. Over the last week, the Longhorns have gotten three commitments from top 20 prospects in the 2026 class.
