Where is Susan Powell? Her disappearance, young sons' horrific deaths haunt family
A special encore “20/20” airing Friday, July 26, at 9 p.m. ET, which originally aired in 2020, revisits the case of missing Utah mom Susan Powell. The show looks at the continued hunt for Susan’s body and the heartbreaking details surrounding the murders of her two sons at the hands of her husband, Josh, who died by suicide after killing the boys. Chuck and Judy Cox have spent the past eight years in agony while trying to find some semblance of justice after their son-in-law, Josh Powell, murdered their two young grandsons. When it finally seemed like they were on the verge of finding some closure earlier this year, the coronavirus pandemic brought everything to a halt. “I don't know anything else I could have done and they're still dead. My daughter's still missing, and now the children are dead,” said Chuck Cox. “I had them safe... They were in my care.”
Utah Supreme Court overturns death sentence for man convicted of murder in rape cover-up
Utah’s Supreme Court overturned a death sentence Thursday for a man convicted of murdering a woman to stop her from testifying against him in a rape case. Justices said Douglas Lovell had ineffective attorneys at his sentencing hearing, but upheld his conviction and sent the case back to a lower court for resentencing. The Utah Attorney General’s Office — the prosecutors in the case — did not have an immediate answer Thursday as to whether Lovell could again receive a death sentence, spokesperson Alex Curcio said.
Drought returns to Utah, but storms forecast to continue in state's driest region
SALT LAKE CITY — Utah's droughtless streak didn't last very long, but the section now in drought could get some much-needed rain over the next few days. About 5% of the state — almost entirely in Tooele County — is back in moderate drought, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor's weekly report released on Thursday. It comes three weeks after the Beehive State was drought-free for the first time since 2019 as it cleared out in eastern Utah.
IOC awards 2034 Winter Games to Utah and pushes state officials to help end FBI investigation
As expected, Salt Lake City will be an Olympics host again after the IOC formally awarded the 2034 Winter Games to the United States bid. The capital city of Utah was the only candidate after the International Olympic Committee gave Salt Lake City exclusive negotiating rights last year in a fast-track contest for 2034. Salt Lake City’s final approval was in a vote Wednesday by IOC members. The IOC also made an unusual demand, pushing local officials to pledge to help end an FBI investigation into actions taken by the World Anti-Doping Agency regarding Chinese swimmers who were allowed to compete at the last Olympics despite positive drug tests.
IOC urges Utah officials to help end U.S. investigation into Chinese doping scandal
Just before Utah was awarded the Winter Games at the International Olympic Committee session in Paris, IOC members urged local organizers to lobby the federal government to end a federal investigation into doping, or risk losing the 2034 Games. The demand relates to a case involving 23 Chinese swimmers who...
