MADISON, Wis. — The remains Vernon County native Sgt. Jack Hohlfeld were recently positively identified among the 997 unidentified soldiers remains found intermingled in the graves after the war. In May of this year the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) announced that U.S. Army Air Forces Sgt. Jack H. Hohlfeld, 29, of Trempealeau, Wisconsin, who was captured and died as a prisoner of war during World War II, was accounted for.
Two people injured in head-on crash near Stoddard
STODDARD, Wis. – Vernon County Sheriff Roy Torgerson reports a two-vehicle, head-on crash occurred Friday afternoon, August 23, at approximately 3:00 p.m., in rural Stoddard, in the town of Bergen. According to the Sheriff’s report a vehicle traveling south on State Highway 35, south of La Crosse, Wis. crossed into the northbound lane and struck an oncoming vehicle, head-on. Both drivers were the only occupants in their respective vehicles.

Jury Convicts Woman on Felony Charge For Fleeing Rochester Police
Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - A Twin Cities area woman has been found guilty of a felony charge connected to a vehicle pursuit in Rochester two years ago. 31-year-old Mickela Joy Vrendenburg was charged last year after she allegedly fled from Rochester police officers in September 2022 when they went to a Rochester address associated with her to serve a felony arrest warrant and observed a vehicle leaving the residence with a malfunctioning taillight. An officer then attempted to stop the vehicle, but Vrenenburg kept driving and allegedly accelerated to around 50 mph in a residential area of southeast Rochester.

After providing human resources service to the Minnesota Prairie County Alliance for nearly a decade, Steele County has opted to discontinue that partnership. A 43-year-old man died Friday while working at Del Monte Foods in Plover, officials confirmed. Rescue crews were called at about 4:45 p.m. Aug. 23 to the factory at 1400 Plover Road.
