Man arrested after fatal bicyclist hit and run in Valentine, NE

VALENTINE, NE (KELO) –An arrest has been made in a fatal bicyclist hit and run west of Valentine, Saturday, June 29.

Adam Earl Joe Cooper, 35, of Arkansas has been arrested in the death of the bicyclist.

According to the Cherry County Attorney’s Office, they received a report of a bicycle laying on the north shoulder of Highway 20 near Valentine.

82-year-old Larry Lynn Covalciuc was found dead, lying in the north ditch. Covalciuc was a participant in the Tour de Nebraska , a 5-day bike ride across 350 miles in Nebraska. He was riding on the last day of the tour.

Cooper has been charged with felony motor vehicle homicide and felony for leaving the scene of an accident.

Grant, Hooker, Arthur and Cherry County Sheriff’s Offices and the Nebraska State Patrol are investigating the crash.
