VALLEY — The Valley City Council held its final meeting for the month of June last Thursday at city hall.

It was announced that city hall will be closed for the Independence Day holiday on Thursday, July 4, and Friday, July 5. Valley Community Center will be open from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. EDT on the Fourth and go back to its normal schedule on Friday.

There will be a free swim in the Community Center pool and basketball in the gym from noon until 3 on the Fourth.

Weather permitting, the annual Fourth of July fireworks show will be getting underway at approximately 9:45 p.m. in the same area it has been for the past few years. Rockets will be launched from the industrial park with good views being afforded around Valley Sportsplex, the Community Center and Fob James Drive. Parking will be available near the Sportsplex, Community Center and on the grass along Industrial Drive and Fob James Drive.

The normal hours of operation for the Community Center are from 5 a.m. until 9:30 p.m. on Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays.

There is an early bird member swim from 5:30 to 7:30 a.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, an adult swim from 11 a.m. until noon every Monday through Friday and open swims from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Mondays through Saturdays and 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Sundays.

In action taken at the Thursday meeting, the council accepted a quote from Alabama Power for underground electrical lines for some new lots on 30th Street and approved an indemnification agreement.

A three-item consent agenda was approved. These items will permit the consumption of alcohol at an upcoming singer/songwriter festival at the Sportsplex amphitheater, a budget amendment for new fencing at the Lakeview property and a weed lien on 30th Street.

The council will next meet at 6 p.m. on Thursday, July 11.
