VALLEY CENTER, Kan. (KSNW) — The Sedgwick County District Attorney’s office said there is insufficient evidence to file charges related to an animal cruelty investigation involving the Valley Center High School varsity baseball team.

The DA’s office said on Tuesday that the Valley Center Police Department presented the results of an ongoing investigation.

“After a full review of the investigation, the determination has been made that insufficient evidence was uncovered to establish the commission of a chargeable crime under Kansas law,” the DA’s office said.

Police said at the time, a VCHS employee told a school resource officer that the varsity baseball team had allegedly killed a chicken on the field before heading to an away game in April. The field is behind Valley Center Intermediate School.

USD 262 suspended VCHS’s baseball season after the allegations surfaced.

KSN News contacted the school district, which said that it “has no further comments regarding this matter.”

The VCPD told KSN that the case is closed, but if new evidence or information is found about the incident, it may be reopened.
