Mt. Washington home has sweeping views of Pittsburgh

Homeowners Jody and Lynn Bunting are prepping to say goodbye to their showcase home atop Pittsburgh’s Mt. Washington neighborhood — and the sweeping views that come with their property overlooking the Ohio, Allegheny and Monongahela rivers.

“It’s the best view in Pittsburgh,” said Jody Bunting. “It’s right over the fountain.”

The contemporary property at 600 Grandview Ave. is listed for $2.9 million with Howard Hanna Realtor Vera Purcell of Mt. Lebanon.

“It has a backdrop for living that never disappoints,” Purcell said. “Believe it or not, you feel that the home is private in the way it’s built.”

Purcell said many Pittsburghers recognize the home because of its modern shape.

“The decks are fantastic and the views are breathtaking,” Purcell added.

Jody Bunting bought the home in 1990. His wife described it as the “ultimate party house.”

“Our friends and family are really going to miss this house,” Jody Bunting said. “It’s very convenient here. We do a lot of walking and it’s just so beautiful all four seasons — but it’s time to downsize.”

The modern home was custom-built for the late Jim Daniell, an Ohio State University football Hall-of-Famer who played for the Chicago Bears and the Cleveland Browns and later resided in Pittsburgh.

“It’s a chick magnet if you’re a single man,” said Lynn Bunting, who is originally from the North Hills. “There’s a wet bar on every level.”

The Buntings were looking for a change and city living options when Jody Bunting noticed a for-sale sign on the property back in the early 1990s.

He didn’t hesitate.

“I went and bought it,” Jody Bunting said.

They hired an engineer to inspect the home and were assured the home is secure and sits on bedrock.

“This would make a great house for a professional athlete. It’d be great if someone from the Steelers or Pirates bought it,” Lynn Bunting said.

The home has a two-car garage, a rare sight along the few single-family homes along Grandview Avenue. The rooftop deck provides outstanding outdoor viewing opportunities.

Built in 1974, the home has three bedrooms and three and a half bathrooms and more than 3,600 square feet of living space. The couple remodeled the bathrooms and kitchen about a decade ago.

A floor-to-ceiling fireplace, game room and river views from all levels of the home ramp up the entertaining factor. The grassy space next to the home is owned by Allegheny County and is maintained by the city.

“It’s no maintenance outside, which is nice,” Lynn said. “It’s a park-like setting.”

Fireworks are easily visible from the living room and the roar of the crowd from Acrisure Stadium is heard inside the home when the Steelers score a touchdown.

“I’m gonna miss it here like crazy, I’ll tell ya that,” Jody Bunting said.
