Homesteader Days marks 75 years with rodeo action
The rain stayed mainly above the plains surrounding Hot Springs this past weekend, and that was a good thing. It was a bit windy at times as was evident to rodeo goers Sunday afternoon at the rodeo grounds, but nary a discouraging word was heard. The occasion was the 75th Annual Homesteader Days festival and rodeo, the Spa City’s annual celebration of its past and present. And although there were a few empty seats in the usually crowded rodeo bleachers, the show was special as always. The three-day event featured numerous bands and entertainment up and down the main street of Hot Springs...
COLUMN: Bobcat lacrosse champs
Griz fans, Velcro down. Preferably with your favorite adult beverages clutched in your hand. This is Montana State University Bobcat news of the highest order. This isn’t on a par with winning the NCAA 1-A football championship, but it’s not like beating Chardon State either. The Cats, unbeknownst to many sports fans even in their home state, are national champions.Say what? Yup, the Bobcats from Bozeman, one of the institutions of higher learning I attended early in life, are the best in the collegiate world of ... lacrosse. MSU won the title last month with what was described as a major, if not stunning...
Thompson Falls' Hanks headed to Boise State
For the vast majority of senior student athletes who participated in high school sports this spring, graduation means the end of their organized sports career. For those who did not receive an athletic scholarship to continue their playing days in college, club sports are usually the alternative for those not willing to hang up the spikes. For a small number of athletes in the Sanders and Mineral counties area, that dream is still alive. According to data recently posted by the Montana High School Association (MHSA), eight graduating seniors have received scholarships to move on to the next level of competition or...

This year’s salutatorian address was delivered by Peyton Wasson, who gave an inspiring speech. “Some of us want to become entrepreneurs, or pilots, or electricians, teachers, engineers, and some of us have absolutely no idea what to do after today,” Wasson said. “Wherever we all end up, I am proud of us all for making it to today.”Local resident and State Jr....
Zoom: Superior students race go karts
Superior High School students race go karts at the second annual event May 31. While looking for neutral, which is between forward and reverse, and the gear shift is tight, Landon Richards lost his balance a few times on the racetrack. Richards used a go kart that was raced last year, and he installed an actual rear axle that he found "laying on the ground somewhere." He struggled to find a tensioner for the belt, so he took the one from his lawnmower at home. He cut out all of the steering after watching YouTube for ideas on how to...

Plains Day festivities action packed
Plains was the go-to place for entertainment, excitement, food and a host of vendors this past Saturday. The celebration of Plains Day got an early start with the Masons serving a pancake breakfast at the VFW building. A hearty breakfast was a must for the busy day ahead. This year Shining Diamond Stables out of St. Ignatius arrived early with their ponies, offering rides for young children. Company representative Anelie Kuglin showed patience with the children. Those who swallowed their fear ended the rides with smiles on their faces.Rocky Mountain Bank was the spot for those who like ice cream, while parade...

Young outlasts Old in student-staff hoops battle
Players came together Friday evening for the fifth annual Plains staff versus students basketball game. However, looking up at the scoreboard, the teams were appropriately called the Old and Young.A flurry of three pointers showed how equal the talent was on both sides during the first few minutes of the game. Experience of the Old team members quickly became apparent as the nothing-but-net shots quickly added up. The identical twin Meredith brothers were a boost to the team. Luckily, they had different colored shorts on, which made the refs' job a bit easier.During the first half of this hotly contested...

Rediscovering home: Summer events
The land had grown deep green alfalfa. Now it hosts the white elegance of the LDS Church, which on this day played host to the soulful rhythms of Hannah Jackson. My brothers and I had picked rock, changed irrigation water, cut and stacked hay on the ground under the chairs where I and other audience members sat. That realization hit as I listened to Hannah, only 19, play mostly music of her own making. The land remains, serves yet another purpose and life goes on. That Hannah is the granddaughter of Superiorites Rick and July Seeman, serves as another reminder...

Locals shine in 8-man football all-star game
Superior High’s Jaxson Green, who recently signed to play to football this coming fall at Montana Tech in Butte, made a few Orediggers’ coaches feel pretty good about their new recruit. Green, who recently placed second in the State Class B Western Division shot put championships, is a massive guy who played quarterback at Superior and likes contact. He got the Blue team on the scoreboard first with an opening quarter touchdown pass during the annual Bob Cleverley 8-man football all-star game last week on Tech’s home field. Green found Mission’s Landon Walks Over Ice with a 39-yard first quarter scoring...

Western Montana tourism group works on new stewardship plan
Thursday evening in the St. Regis Community Center, Racene Friede, president and CEO of Western Montana’s Glacier Country, held a town hall meeting to listen to the residents of Mineral County regarding visitors and tourism to the area. She also discussed a stewardship plan for the region, which was developed as a result of town hall meetings in 2021. “When things went kind of topsy-turvy back in 2020, we had this huge influx of people to Montana during the pandemic, and it was overwhelming,” she said to a small audience. “That was at a time when our communities didn’t have...
Softball and track championships in the books
The crowns have been installed and the 2024 Montana high school spring sports season is in the books. And perhaps the most contested contest of them all was Manhattan’s wins over Shepherd in the Class BC softball State Championship game, giving them the title in what was overtime. After losing 12-0 to Shepherd earlier in the tournament at Billings’ sprawling Stewart Park softball complex, Manhattan needed a pair of victories over the Fillies to become state champions. They took the first step in that direction with an 11-8 win that opened the path for a Manhattan challenge, both teams having one loss...
Lady Hawks land two on All-State roster
Successful seasons are generally the product of teams playing as one unit. Everyone on the same page. It helps if there are some standout players in the mix, as was the case with this year’s Thompson Falls-Noxon Lady Hawks who made it to their second straight Montana state B-C championship tournament. In the wake of a 19-10 season, including a trip to the state finals in Billings, the Lady Hawks landed two players, both juniors, on the B-C All-State softball team. Sarah Koskela, who led the team in several offensive categories and was part of a one-two pitching punch for the Hawks,...
