    Middle school hosts fundraiser for family of teen who drowned at SPI

    HARLINGEN, Texas ( ValleyCentral ) — A Harlingen middle school is hosting a basket drive fundraiser to support the family of a teenager who died after drowning on South Padre Island.

    Anllelith Moreno Solis was a student at Vernon Middle School who is hosting the basket drive during morning drop-offs and afternoon pick-ups.

    Students and parents are encouraged to place cash in the baskets. All collected money will go directly to the family of the 14-year-old.

    “Let’s come together and support our fellow Vernon family in need,” the school announced.

    The basket drive will be held Wednesday, May 22 and Thursday, May 23.

    Moreno went missing Sunday morning on South Padre Island with preliminary reports stating she was pulled by a rip current while swimming.

    She was found Sunday night on the shoreline two miles north of where she disappeared.

    Friends and family have also started a GoFundMe for the teen’s funeral expenses.
