SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, Texas ( ValleyCentral ) — Vistors and locals can expect an increase in traffic on South Padre Island during this Memorial Day weekend.

Drivers heading to the island wait over half an hour to cross the causeway. Local police are out patrolling to make sure the traffic runs smoothly.

“Not much traffic at all, but that was on Friday once we got over the causeway towards South Padre. It did start backing up quite a bit,” said Lisa Foster a visitor heading to the island.

Officials at South Padre are asking beachgoers to explore different methods of transportation to ease the traffic further.
