HARLINGEN, Texas ( ValleyCentral ) — With the start of the school year comes the inevitable illnesses that can make their way to your home.

The flu, COVID, norovirus, and more not only affect students but teachers as well.

Eddie Olivarez, Hidalgo County Health Chief Administrator says it happens when people have been on vacation they return and share germs and viruses.

“They’re just in the proximity and kids a lot of times, they will not cover their mouth when they sneeze, or won’t wash their heads frequently. How do we prevent this? Get your vaccines for the flu, for COVID. They’ll be out in September. They are not required but it’s recommended. In addition make sure you teach your children, especially the small ones, how to properly wash their hands with soap and water, very important.”

Recently school districts have required hand sanitizers and disinfecting wipes on their school supply lists to help keep students and teachers in good health. However, teachers are urged to get a full physical before school begins and have their vaccinations up to date.

Olivarez added that there is also an economic advantage to keeping your children healthy.

“Think about how much school districts spend on substitute teachers, on all those things when their staff is out. How much time do you lose from work? There’s an economic incentive for you to vaccinate your children, keep your kids healthy, and keep yourself healthy, because that helps save you money every year,” said Olivarez.
