MCALLEN, Texas ( ValleyCentral ) — Hidalgo County Judge Richard Cortez says they are working on a drought contingency plan to be used by all cities in Hidalgo County.

The plan will introduce a series of “trigger points” that will inform cities on how little water they have.

The points range in severity, scaling with how much water each city requires.

Judge Cortez says, “There’s always a fight for who gets the resource. And we want to be fair and equitable in the distribution of that. That’s why we need to have rules that will take all of that into consideration.”

He says residents can save water by shrinking shower time, as well as reporting any neighbors or facilities that they believe are wasting water.
