HARLINGEN, Texas ( ValleyCentral ) – Rain and thunderstorm activity is going to increase across the Rio Grande Valley on Sunday and Monday thanks to a push from a low pressure system over in western Mexico.

Moisture and energy will be shoved across the Valley providing the key elements for showers, pockets of steady rain, and thunderstorms. Some thunderstorms may produce heavy downpours and frequent lightning.

The Storm Prediction Center keeps the Valley in the general thunderstorm category. This means we will probably see moderate thunderstorms and not a severe weather outbreak. Some of the thunderstorms, however, may contain heavy downpours and frequent lightning.

It looks like the Valley may get as little as a tenth of an inch of rain or up to half of an inch from Sunday through Monday. There is the chance for isolated, heavier, amounts wherever a slow moving cell passes.

Our chance for rain and thunderstorms will repeat itself Monday.

Come Tuesday the mechanism driving the chance for rain and thunderstorms will dissipate.
