MCALLEN, Texas ( ValleyCentral ) — A photography exhibit is currently on display at the McAllen International Airport in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month.

Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated Sept. 15 through Oct. 15.

The exhibit, titled Maya Heritage: Past, Present, Future, features images that highlight symbolic elements and cultures of various countries from Mexico and Central America.

A grand opening of the exhibit was celebrated Tuesday morning with McAllen airport officials along with the Consulates of El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala, and Mexico.

Family members Evelyn, Cindy and Anai Toledo are proud to see people learning about their Mayan culture.

“I think it’s important to give recognition to the Mayan culture, because a lot of people do believe that we don’t exist anymore, and we are still here,” Evelyn said.

The three sisters traveled from Los Angeles to be a part of the grand opening and show a traditional dance to attendees.

“It’s important because our dance is our connection to the universe,” Cindy said. “When we dance, we share that moment in that space with with our ancestors in the spirit world.”

“To be able to show our culture is very exciting and honorable,” Anai said.

Maya Heritage: Past, Present, Future will be on display in the airport lobby starting September 17 through Thursday, October 17.
