    Man gets 10 years for attempt to smuggle meth in shoebox

    McALLEN, Texas ( ValleyCentral ) — A 23-year-old man was sentenced to 10 years in federal prison for drug trafficking, the U.S. Attorney’s Office announced.

    On Nov. 29, 2022, Jesse James Gonzalez was crossing to the United States through the Donna Port of Entry carrying a shoebox containing two packages of white crystal meth, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

    Authorities at the port of entry discovered the meth during an inspection and Gonzalez admitted to them he had “ice” in the shoebox.

    On Sept. 27, 2023, Gonzalez pleaded guilty to charges of drug trafficking.

    U.S. District Judge Micaela Alvarez ordered Gonzalez to serve 10 years in federal prison, followed by five years of supervised release.
