    HCSO rules canal drowning an accident

    WESLACO, Texas ( ValleyCentral ) — Investigators have ruled the death of a man who fell into a canal as accidental.

    At 1:20 p.m. Thursday Hidalgo County deputies responded to a welfare concern south of Mile 2 W. Road on Mile 10 N. Road, according to a news release from the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office.

    Witnesses reported to deputies the victim voluntarily jumped into the canal and never resurfaced.

    Emergency responders were called to the scene and located the body later in the afternoon.

    The release added an autopsy had been performed by the county medical examiner, who confirmed the cause of death as drowning.

    The body of the man has not been identified.
