SAN BENITO, ( ValleyCentral ) — October 17 marks one year since the tragic death of San Benito Police Department Lieutenant Milton Resendez. In honor of his life and sacrifice, the San Benito Police Department will host a vigil to remember Resendez.

The vigil will take place 7 p.m. Oct. 17 at the San Benito Police Department Headquarters, located at 601 North Oscar Williams Road.

The public and members of law enforcement from surrounding agencies are welcome to honor the late lieutenant at the event.

On Oct. 17, 2023, Resendez was shot and killed following an hours-long vehicle pursuit.

That night, at the 1100 block of Sam Houston, Resendez’s vehicle and the suspect’s vehicle crossed paths. The suspects shot an “unknown amount of rounds,” two striking the unit, police said. One of the rounds struck the door and hit Resendez in the abdomen below his body armor.

Resendez, who served as a police officer for more than 30 years, was pronounced dead after being transported to Valley Baptist Hospital.

Since his death, the two suspects involved in the deadly pursuit have been detained and charged. The state is seeking the death penalty for one of the suspects charged in connection to the case.
