EDINBURG, Texas ( ValleyCentral ) — Edinburg has issued a city ordinance to limit car washes in an effort to conserve water and promote sustainability.

The ordinance restricts car washes from being built within two miles of an existing car wash, which are part of efforts by the city’s Drought Contingency Plan.

Regulations also require new car washes to use recycled water systems.

The car wash limitations are designed to protect the public health, safety and general welfare of the community, according to the ordinance.

City leaders passed the ordinance which was put into effect Tuesday, September 17.

As previously reported on ValleyCentral, water levels in the Rio Grande Valley are at a historically low level , prompting local leaders to declare emergency orders amid the ongoing drought.

The new restrictions in Edinburg come months after Brownsville became one of the first Rio Grande Valley cities to place a local order on car washes.

Brownsville issued limitations in April which restricts new car washes from being built within five miles of one another, also in an effort to address the region’s drought condtitions.

what about those places that waste water? I have pictures of big houses spilling water onto streets and across streets. I called NAWS about it but they did not do a single thing. Must be someone important to city to allow them to waste water
