MCALLEN, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Region One Education Service Center and DHR Health held a learning session Tuesday for students interested in pursuing a career in health care.

High school students from nine rural school districts attended the session by the DHR Health Education and Career Development and the DHR Health High School and Community Outreach Program at the Lone Star National Bank in McAllen.

“When it comes time to apply for university, it gives them a leg up if they’re using their personal statement, including their applications,” said Dr. Alexandria Escobedo. “It’s been known that some of the students that do those things and participate in these types of events, get into really great schools because they’re able to get scholarships and get into medical school as well as a result of what they do in high school.”

Students participated with health professionals and visited the DHR Health Laboratories to explore various healthcare careers.
