According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), West Nile virus is the leading cause of mosquito-borne disease in the U.S.

Humans can become infected through the bite of an infected mosquito or tick.

The CDC states that one out of five people who are infected will develop a fever or other symptoms. One out of 150 will develop serious illnesses that can become fatal.

A data report by the CDC shows there have been 748 West Nile virus cases in 2024, as of September.

In August, three cases of West Nile viruses were identified in Hidalgo County.

Investigation concluded all three Hidalgo County cases were travel-related.
