SOUTH PADRE ISALND, Texas ( ValleyCentral ) — The Conference on Crimes Against Women is being held Monday and Tuesday at South Padre Island.

The Conference on Crimes Against Women is a yearly conference held in Dallas that provides expert training on the identification, investigation, and prosecution of all types of violent crimes against women.

These crimes include domestic and dating violence, sexual assault, stalking, and human trafficking.

Every year, the conference welcomes more than 2,500 attendees from all 50 states and countries and territories around the world.

The purpose for the conference is to explain to women why more than 45,000 women were murdered by men in the United States between 1996 and 2020, according to the The Violence Policy Center.

The goal is to mitigate this trend and inform women on how to defend themselves and know the signs.

On Monday, locals were training on best-practice strategies to address the full spectrum of gender-based crimes.

The event serves as an extension of the Conference on Crimes Against Women (CCAW) to highlight the specific gender-based challenges that are unique to coastal cities like SPI.

Victims and survivors of these areas are generally confronted with geographic isolation and transportation issues, as well as a lack of anonymity and limited access to resources and services.

Some of the topics covered Monday included aquatic homicide, human trafficking, immigration and border issues, sexual abuse, CPS involvement, 9-1-1 reporting, domestic violence, law enforcement report writing, forensic nursing and prosecutorial perspectives.
