UTRGV football players visit Edinburg elementary school

EDINBURG, Texas ( ValleyCentral ) — Vaqueros football players took a break from the field to surprise students at an Edinburg elementary school Wednesday morning.

The athletes visited Alfonso Ramirez Elementary to welcome students onto campus for the day.

“We’re here for the kids to give them hope so they can get to where they want to be one day,” said La’Darian Lewis, a Defensive Back of the UTRGV football team.

Head football coach Travis Bush has recruited 89 students to the first football roster in the institution’s history, according to the UTRGV Athletics website.

The team’s first open practice was hosted in early September followed by ongoing practices for the first UTRGV football game next year.

UTRGV football is set to kickoff on August 30, 2025.
