PHARR, Texas ( ValleyCentral ) — The City of Pharr issued a public water notice to inform locals that they will be disinfecting their water and that it may taste or smell different.

According to the city, public water systems that use chloramine usually perform periodic and temporary conversions to free chlorine as a preventative maintenance.

Public water systems are required to properly clean their water and maintain an adequate disinfectant residual.

Chloramine is made up of chlorine and ammonia.

Additionally, prolonged use of chloramine in combination with other factors such as high temperatures or stagnant water may affect water quality because they result in growth and the presence of organic matter in the pipes.

These factors can affect the disinfectant residual.

Therefore, a temporary conversion to free chlorine combined with flushing activities helps to improve the quality of the water overall.

While the disinfecting process is safe for consumption, cooking, bathing, and everyday use, the smell and taste of your water may be temporarily different.

For more information on the water treatment call (956) 402-4302.
