EDINBURG, Texas ( ValleyCentral ) — The Texas Workforce Commission awarded a grant to Region One Education Service Center this week in support of no-cost education for adult learners.

Region One received a $3 million grant that will allow for workforce development and continued free education services to local communities.

“Our goal is to provide adult education and literacy services to residents and the communities of Hidalgo, Willacy and Starr County,” said Arcelia Sanchez, Director for Workforce Partnership Initiatives with Region One.

The Region One Adult Education Program works toward engaging adults into education to be able to earn a GED certificate, pass the citizenship exam, pursue higher education and follow a career path.

Coursework is delivered in various formats, including traditional classroom instruction, online learning, distance education and partnerships with school systems and community-based organizations.

“Our work and our strategies are really evolved around ensuring that individuals not only get the literacy skills that they need, but that they get a credential of value where we know there is projected job growth and high wages awaiting them,” Sanchez continued.

Region One serves school districts across eight South Texas counties including Brooks, Cameron, Hidalgo, Jim Hogg, Starr, Webb, Willacy and Zapata Counties.
