Lara Croft is back. In the new trailer for Netflix’s animated series “Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft,” Hayley Atwell takes on the voice of the iconic archeologist for a new adventure set in the video game franchise’s universe.

“Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft” picks up after the events of the “Tomb Raider” video game “Survivor” trilogy (“Tomb Raider”, “Rise of the Tomb Raider” and “Shadow of the Tomb Raider”), and will chart the globetrotting heroine’s next chapter exploring ancient mysteries.

Per the show’s official description: “Following the events of the ‘Survivor ‘series, Lara Croft has abandoned her friends to embark on increasingly more perilous solo adventures. But she must return home when a dangerous and powerful Chinese artifact is stolen from Croft Manor by a thief with an uncanny personal connection. Her daring pursuit will take her on an adventure around the world and to the depths of forgotten tombs, where she will be forced to confront her true self, and decide just what kind of hero she wants to become.”

Along with Atwell as Lara Croft, the animated show’s voice cast includes Allen Maldonado as Zip and Earl Baylon reprising his role as Jonah from the “Tomb Raider” video game franchise.

The original “Tomb Raider” video game was released in 1996 on the Sega Satrun by developers Core Design and Aspyr and had sold over 2.5 million units by 1997. As of 2024, 20 “Tomb Raider” games have been released.

The game was adapted into a multi-film “Tomb Raider” movie franchise starring first Angelina Jolie as Lara Croft and later Alicia Vikander.

Tasha Huo (“The Witcher: Blood Origin,” “Red Sonja”) is writer and showrunner and executive produces “Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft” alongside Dmitri M. Johnson, Timothy I. Stevenson; Jacob Robinson, Dallas Dickinson, Noah Hughes, Howard Bliss, Jen Chambers and Brad Graeber.

The series hails from Legendary Television, Crystal Dynamics, Powerhouse Animation, dj2 Entertainment and Tractor Pants.

As video game adaptations rise in popularity with the general masses and awards voters thanks to the success of HBO’s “The Last of Us” and Amazon’s “Fallout,” “Tomb Raider” is among several iconic franchises that’s being freshly mined for new projects, but in this case, it’s got a variety of titles set up: the animated Netflix series, as well as Amazon’s live-action “Tomb Raider” series from Phoebe Waller-Bridge and a video game based on the IP.

“Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft” launches Oct. 10. Watch the trailer for the show below.
