Disney’s “Alien: Romulus” maintained its grip on the U.K. and Ireland box office, earning a shade over £2 million ($2.6 million) in its second week of release for a cumulative total of £8.2 million ($10.8 million), per numbers from Comscore.

The sci-fi horror entry scared off strong competition over the Bank Holiday long weekend in the territory from holdovers and new releases alike. Sony’s “It Ends With Us” remained in second place with £1.8 million in its third week, bringing its total to £15.8 million. Walt Disney’s “Deadpool & Wolverine” continued to draw audiences in its fifth week, landing at No. 3 with £1.7 million and pushing its total to more than £52 million.
Universal’s “Despicable Me 4” held steady at fourth place, adding £1.4 million in its seventh week for a £41.9 million cume. Curzon’s “Kneecap” made a strong debut at No. 5 with just over £1 million while Warner Bros.’ “Blink Twice” opened at No. 6 with £746,328.
Disney’s “Inside Out 2” demonstrated staying power after 11 weeks, bringing in £604,523 for a £56.9 million total. Entertainment Film Distributors’ “The Crow” debuted at No. 8 with £410,308, and Trafalgar Releasing’s 15th-anniversary reissue of “Coraline” took the ninth spot, adding £398,628 for a £2.2 million total. Warner Bros.’ “Twisters” rounded out the top 10 with £280,756 in its sixth week, for a total of £13.5 million.
Aug. 30 brings a diverse slate of new releases and anniversary reissues. Among the new releases, Entertainment Film Distributors is opening the latest adaptation of “The Count of Monte Cristo,” starring Pierre Niney, while Metis Films introduces Toronto-bowing Saudi thriller “Mandoob (Night Courier)” from director Ali Kalthami.
Black Bear is opening SXSW winner “Sing Sing,” headlined by Colman Domingo, and Miracle Comms is bowing horror “Broken Bird.” Sony’s “AfrAId” also hails from the horror genre while Universal’s “Touch” is from veteran Icelandic director Baltasar Kormákur.

Other notable releases include Trinity CineAsia’s Chinese film “Black Dog,” directed by Guan Hu, which won the Un Certain Regard Award at Cannes this year; Conic’s BFI London Film Festival-winning Swedish drama “Paradise is Burning”; and Vertigo’s Toronto title “Close to You” starring Elliot Page.
From India, Yash Raj Films is releasing Malayalam-language found footage thriller “Footage.”
The weekend’s limited engagements and anniversary screenings include Sony Pictures’ one-week run of “The Amazing Spider-Man 2,” Paramount’s 55th-anniversary 4K reissue of “The Italian Job,” the 40th-anniversary 4K restoration of James Cameron’s “The Terminator” from Park Circus, who are also bowing the 4K restoration of “Ocean’s Eleven,” while EMG (Enriched Media Group) debuts documentary “Point of Change” for one day only.
Batman’s 85th anniversary is marked by Park Circus re-releasing “The LEGO Batman Movie” and the animated classic “Batman: Mask of the Phantasm.”
On Aug. 31, Piece of Magic Entertainment presents “Andre Rieu’s 2024 Maastricht Concert: Power Of Love” for music enthusiasts.
