“The Perfect Couple” is the latest show to tap into the valuable IP of a bestselling novel. The murder-mystery series, starring Nicole Kidman and now streaming on Netflix, is based on Elin Hilderbrand’s 2018 novel of the same name.

Developed for the screen by showrunner Jenna Lamia (“Good Girls”), the show follows Amelia Sacks (Eve Hewson), whose upcoming marriage to Benji Winbury (Billy Howle) is derailed after the death, and supposed murder, of her maid of honor Merritt Monaco (Meghann Fahy). As the police investigate the family, they discover that each person in the wedding party are harboring their own secrets.

Despite the similarities, those that have read the book will immediately notice differences in the adaptation . Some characters in the show, such as Isabelle Adjani, a family friend of the Winburys, don’t exist in the book, for example, while some characters, such as Amelia’s parents, are given much more space in the novel.

The show has received mixed reviews since its Sept. 5 release, likely due, at least partly, to the surprising departures from the original story.

In her review of the show , Variety TV critic Aramide Tinubu writes that “despite the nonsensical narrative and its lack of actual depth, the series has enough magnetic star power and conspicuous intrigue to make it a delightful and highly watchable experience.”
