Fremantle has acquired the global distribution rights for “Mozart: Rise of a Genius,” a three-part docudrama from 72 Films. The show offers an in-depth exploration of the life and legacy of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The series will premiere on Sept. 16 on BBC Two and BBC iPlayer. Variety is debuting an exclusive clip, below.

“The series examines the tragically short yet profoundly impactful 35 years of the musical prodigy who revolutionized the world of music,” according to a statement. “Marked by intrigue, rivalry and scandal, Mozart’s story is told through a masterful blend of interviews, rich dramatic reenactments, and electrifying live orchestral performances. Set against the backdrop of a flourishing European culture, the series charts his journey from a high-society darling to a rebellious outsider.”

The show will be filmed on location across historic sites – including theaters, palaces and Mozart’s homes – in Vienna and Hungary. The series also features performances by the Hungarian Studio Orchestra, filmed exclusively for the production, which provides the soundtrack.

The series includes contributions from historians, musicologists and classical music enthusiasts, including Stephen Fry, Sheila Hancock, Richard E. Grant, Adjoa Andoh, Karla Crome, Robert Greenberg, Jane Glover, Flora Willson, David McVicar, Edward Gardner, Lucy Crowe and Golda Schultz.

Jens Richter, CEO, commercial and international, Fremantle, said: “’Mozart: Rise of a Genius’ is a powerful series that celebrates the brilliance of Mozart and highlights the complex, fascinating world he navigated during his lifetime. We are delighted to collaborate again with 72 Films and the BBC to share this remarkable story with our partners and their audiences, who will gain a fresh perspective on this legendary figure.”

Mark Bell, commissioning editor, BBC Arts, said: “Mozart’s story is incredibly dramatic, his character contradictory, his end untimely and sad, and his compositions changed the direction of classical music. 72 Films has brought him to life in a way that is ambitious, captivating and enlightening. I am sure BBC audiences will be thrilled by this very special series.”

“Mozart: Rise of a Genius” is produced by 72 Films for BBC2. David Glover, Rob Coldstream and Nick Holt are executive producing for 72 Films. The series producer is Melanie Fall and the series director is Alice Smith.
