The Zurich Film Festival will honor Swedish actor Alicia Vikander, who won an Oscar with “The Danish Girl,” during its 20th edition, which runs Oct. 3-13.

Vikander will accept the festival’s Golden Eye Award on Oct. 8 when she presents the Swiss premiere of her new film “The Assessment,” which is directed by Fleur Fortuné.

“The Assessment,” in which she stars opposite Elizabeth Olsen, tells the story of a society striving for perfection, living in a world devastated by climate change, trying to optimize life – including the assessment of parenthood. A couple is examined by an assessor for seven days to determine their suitability to have children.

The award recognizes her “outstanding acting performance and her consistently courageous and clever choice of roles,” as demonstrated in auteur films and blockbusters alike, including “Ex Machina,” “The Danish Girl,” “Anna Karenina,” “Jason Bourne,” “The Green Knight” and “Tomb Raider.”

In 2015, she was awarded an Oscar for her performance as Gerda Wegener in Tom Hooper’s “The Danish Girl,” as well as a host of other awards including a SAG Award and Critics Choice Award. She was nominated for BAFTAs for “The Danish Girl” and “Ex Machina.”

“I am incredibly honored to be receiving the Golden Eye Award at Zurich Film Festival and proud to be amongst such a talented list of past honorees. I was last there in 2017, for the ZFF Masters and premiere of ‘Euphoria,’ and am so pleased to be returning to the festival once again this year.”

Previous award winners include Diane Kruger, Eddie Redmayne, Iris Berben, Kristen Stewart, Jake Gyllenhaal, John Malkovich, Helen Hunt and Olivia Colman.

Christian Jungen, artistic director of the Zurich Film Festival, said: “We are delighted that Alicia Vikander is returning to the ZFF for our 20th anniversary after visiting us in 2017. It was a great pleasure to meet her at the 2023 Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. On that occasion, I told her about our anniversary and mentioned how happy we would be to welcome her back to Zurich. We are thrilled that it worked out – and that we are able to show her new film ‘The Assessment’ as a Swiss premiere at the ZFF. Vikander is a versatile and extraordinary character actress who captivates her audience with her compelling aura.”

In addition to her acting career, Vikander has made her mark as a producer. Under her own production banner, Vikarious Production, she debuted with the film “Euphoria,” starring alongside Eva Green. The film had its world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival in 2017, followed by its European premiere at the Zurich Film Festival.

Vikander’s acting credits also include titles such as “Firebrand” (2023), “Irma Vep” (2022), “Blue Bayou” (2021), “The Light Between Oceans” (2016), “Submergence” (2017), and “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.” (2015).
