FX, which falls under the Disney umbrella, finished the night with 36 total wins, with “Shogun” picking up 18 and “The Bear” getting 11. This marks the first time in at least 15 years that the top network of the night was not Netflix or HBO. It is also the first time FX has topped all other networks in total wins. FX’s best year prior to this was in 2016 with 18 wins.
“The Bear” broke its own record for most wins by a comedy series in a single year, topping last year’s 10 wins. Cast members Jeremy Allen White, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and Liza Colón-Zayas all won statuettes, as did series creator Chris Storer in the best directing for a comedy category. Likewise, “Shogun” broke the record for the most wins by any show in a single season. Stars Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai won for best actor and actress in a drama respectively, while the show itself won the award for best drama series.
FX had 93 nominations going into this year’s Emmys, including 25 for “Shogun” and 23 for “The Bear,” with the latter breaking the record for the most nominations for a single season of a comedy series.
Another big winner of the night was the Netflix limited series “Baby Reindeer,” which won the award for best limited series as well as best actor in a limited series (Richard Gadd) and best supporting actress in a limited series (Jessica Gunning). The show won six awards total. Netflix won 24 Emmys for the year overall, including four wins for the popular animated series “Blue Eye Samurai” and a win for Elizabeth Debicki for her portrayal of Princess Diana in “The Crown.”
HBO and Max finished the night with 14 total wins. “Hacks” picked up multiple awards, including best comedy series, best actress in a comedy (Jean Smart), and best writing for a comedy series. Meanwhile, Jodie Foster won the award for best actress in a limited series for “True Detective: Night Country.”
Coming out of the Creative Arts Emmys on Sept. 7 and 8, “Shogun” already had 14 Emmy Awards, while “The Bear” had seven. FX had 27 statuettes total going into the Primetime Emmy Awards. Netflix, meanwhile, had 18 and HBO/Max and Apple TV+ both had eight. “Shogun’s” 14 wins already represented the most wins ever for a single show in a single year.
