Global Screen has picked up the international distribution rights (excluding Benelux and Latvia) to Ineke Houtman’s “The Book of Everything,” which is adapted from Guus Kuijer’s autobiographical novel.

The Dutch book, which contains scenes of magical realism, has been translated into 14 European languages and Japanese. It was also adapted as a theater play in Australia.

September Film released the film in the Netherlands on Oct. 10. The producer is Jorn Bars at KaapHollandFilm.

Nine-year-old Thomas, along with his rebellious sister and timid mother, is kept down by his strictly religious father. He uses his vivid imagination to escape this oppressive reality to learn that happiness starts when you manage to shed your fears.

Thomas is growing up in Amsterdam in 1961. The gloom of the post-war years is slowly cast off and the hip neighbors have purchased a television set. How different things are at Thomas’ home, where his father (Daan Schuurmans) holds sway.

Using his fertile imagination, Thomas finds a way out, and perhaps even a solution to his dad’s tyrannical regime.

Bars said: “The film tells a compelling story about domestic violence, and teaches us that by not being afraid anymore, you can become happy in life. It does so in a fantastic, visual, and humorous way, which will entertain young and old.”

Klaus Rasmussen, Global Screen’s co-head of international sales and acquisitions (theatrical), said: “‘The Book of Everything’ impressed us with its unique blend of captivating drama and the magical universe of a child facing significant personal challenges. The film appeals to both young and adult audiences, taking them on an emotional journey.”
