NBC Plans Special ‘Tonight Show’ to Air After ‘Sunday Night Football’ on November 17

The late-night host will host a new episode of NBC’s “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” on Sunday, November 17, following the network’s broadcast that evening of a “Sunday Night Football” match-up between the New York Jets and the Indianapolis Colts. Local news will air between the conclusion of “Sunday Night Football” and the start of “Tonight.”

Fallon will tape the broadcast earlier in the day before heading out to MetLife Stadium, where he will be able to create some promos for the special Sunday-night episode.

“Every time we get the opportunity to work with our friends at NBC Sports, it’s something we look forward to,” said Chris Miller, showrunner for “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.,” in a statement. “We can’t wait to bring our show to fans of ‘Sunday Night Football’ — it’s going to be a must-watch night of TV.” Guests include Jon Hamm, Lindsay Lohan and Pharrell

Fallon and his team have done post-football broadcasts in the past, including some after NBC Super Bowl telecasts. But “Tonight” paired up with football more frequently in 2019, when NBC aired five different Sunday broadcasts of the late-night mainstay following “SNF” telecasts.

“What a great night of entertainment with a special airing of ‘The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,’ following ‘Sunday Night Football.’ Jimmy and the show have been great collaborators with NBC Sports over the years,” said Rick Cordella, president of NBC Sports, in a statement.

Sports have grown more appealing to TV’s late-night crew. Fallon in September squared off against DJ Khaled in a “Cardigan Classic” that had them compete in a four-hole challenge that was taped for a Friday-night late-night broadcast. Stephen Colbert in 2022 teamed up with the Funny or Die production company for a celebrity pickleball tournament that aired on CBS.
