SAT test dates 2024: 10 SAT testing sites abruptly close in California

College-bound students were surprised to find Scholastic Aptitude Test sites closed Saturday in 10 California cities.

The students were registered to take the tests that day, but the decision to close them was made shortly before Saturday. Reasons included "disruptive construction, power outages and staff no-shows," said the College Board, which oversees the SAT. The SAT is taken by high school students and is among the test scores that many colleges and universities continue to use in their admissions. But it's no longer required by the University of California and other schools.

Testing cites were closed at high schools or colleges in Big Bear City, Elk Grove, Mammoth Lakes, Mcfarland, Cardiff, Fairfield, St. Helena, San Clemente, Turlock and Rocklin, according to CollegeBoard .

In a statement Monday, the College Board said it doesn't control the sites. "Ultimately, it’s up to the test center to decide whether they can administer the SAT."

When centers tell the College Board they must cancel a testing date, the board looks at nearby centers to figure out a way for students to take the test, the board said.

"Once the closure is confirmed, we notify students within 24 hours," the board said, but noted the decision to close the sites was made shortly before the test date. It said that frustrated students.

The board said it is working with centers to set makeup dates for the tests. According to the college board website, students can get their registrations refunded.

Here are the remaining SAT dates for the 2024-25 school year:

• Oct. 5, 2024 (registration deadline: Sept. 20, 2024)
• Nov 2, 2024 (registration deadline: Oct 18, 2024)
• Dec 7, 2024 (registration deadline: Nov. 22, 2024)
• March 8, 2025 (registration deadline: Feb. 21, 2025)
• May 3, 2025 (registration deadline: April 18, 2025)
• June 7, 2025 (registration deadline: May 22, 2025)
