A limited-edition Shirley Temple 7UP flavor appears in the works for the holidays.

Food and snack insider Snackolater posted on Instagram Tuesday that the lemon-lime, pomegranate and cherry-flavored soda could be available in cans and 2-liter bottles in late October.

On Thursday, Shirley Temple flavors in regular and zero-sugar options could be found on Walmart and Target websites but are listed as out of stock or not available for purchase.

The flavor is not listed on the 7UP website as of Thursday .

On Thursday, the most recent comments on 7Up's official Instagram were asking about the new flavor such as "Will the Shirley Temple come in diet/zero sugar pls say yes" and "We need that canned Shirley Temple Neow."

    History of The Shirley Temple

Folks know Shirley Temple for her beloved, innocent roles in films. But, she's also known for the non-alcoholic drink named after her.

It is said that in the late 1930s, a bartender at Chasen's in Beverly Hills invented the cocktail . The bartender made the drink for the young actress during her peak fame.

Mixed together with grenadine and ginger ale or lemon-lime soda, the drink is topped off with a maraschino cherry.

The sweet concoction would later become a fun drink asked for by kids and adults alike.

There are also twists on the Shirley Temple, including the Roy Rogers — named for the famed movie cowboy —which substitutes lemon-lime soda for Coke.

Want to make a Shirley Temple at home?

The beverage can be easily made at home if you can't find Shirley Temple 7UP in your local store. Here's the Shirley Temple recipe:

    Ingredients:

    • 3 ounces lemon-lime soda or ginger ale
    • Dash grenadine
    • Ice cubes at your discretion
    • Maraschino cherry for garnish

Pour lemon-lime soda and ginger ale into a glass with ice cubes. Then, add a dash of grenadine. Finally, stir your refreshing drink and top it off with a cherry.

    What is 7UP's history?

The soda first appeared in 1929 as a headache remedy, according to a 1978 article in the New York Times. The company was founded by Charles Leiper Grigg, Edmund Ridgeway and Frank Y. Gladney.

Grigg and Ridgeway purchased a bottling plant and started selling the lemon and lime soda two weeks before the stock market crash in 1929, according to the article. Gladney, a lawyer, joined the company soon after. Grigg, who started out running a general store in Prices Branch, Mo., came up with the name Seven-Up.

After changing ownership over the years, the brand is now owned by Keurig Dr Pepper .

    How popular is 7Up?

A new soda could help 7UP shake things up. It ranked No. 17 in a 2024 list of top 50 nonalcoholic drink brand value ranking from Brand Finance. In 2023, 7Up ranked No. 12.

Brand Finance has compiled a directory of brand values and company profiles that are updated annually since 2008.

The top nonalcoholic beverage in 2024 is Coca-Cola, according to Brand Finance. Pepsi is ranked No. 2 and Red Bull is No. 3. All had the same rankings in 2023.
