Lonnie Walker signs one-year deal with Celtics

Free agent guard Lonnie Walker IV has signed a one-year deal with the Boston Celtics, ESPN NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski first reported Wednesday evening.

Instead of using their final roster spot on Walker, the Celtics are giving him an Exhibit 10 contract, according to NBA insider Shams Charania of The Athletic .

An Exhibit 10 is essentially a training camp deal where players could earn a bonus anywhere from $5K to $75K. If he is waived before the regular season begins, he can play for the Maine Celtics, the team’s G-League affiliate. If he succeeds, he could eventually be converted to a one-year minimum deal.

It’s essentially a no-risk move for the reigning champions.

Walker, 25, was the best free agent left on the board. He averaged 9.7 points on 42.3 percent shooting, including 38.4 percent from 3-point range and 76.3 percent from the free-throw line. In six combined seasons, he’s posted 9.8 points and 2.3 boards on 42.2/35.6/79.5 shooting splits.

Assuming he made the roster, I could envision Walker cracking Boston’s tight rotation, where he could make a legitimate impact as a sparkplug off the bench with the rest of Boston’s bench unit.
