Luis Tiant Passes Away at 83

The MLB has lost a legend today, according to CBS Boston , longtime Red Sox pitcher Luis Tiant passed away this morning at 83-years-old.

Luis Tiant, or El Tiante, pitched for 19 seasons in the MLB from 1964 through 1982. His prime was mostly when he was a member of the Red Sox from 1971 through 1978, which is why he will likely be remembered as a Red Sox player over any other team. Luis also spent time with the Cleveland Indians, Minnesota Twins, New York Yankees, Pittsburgh Pirates and the California Angels.

Tiant had a career record of 229-172 with a 3.30 ERA and 2,416 strikeouts. As a member of the Red Sox, he was top six in Cy Young voting three times in his eight years in Boston. In 1968 and 1972, he won the American League ERA title.

One of his best stretches of play was during the 1975 World Series when the Red Sox took on the Cincinnati Reds. In Game 1, Tiant threw a complete game shutout, and in Game 4 had a complete game win. In 1997, he was inducted into the Boston Red Sox Hall of Fame, and in 2002 was inducted into the Hispanic Heritage Baseball Hall of Fame.

Luis had the kind of unforgettable presence that made you feel like you were part of his world. He was a pitcher with incredible talent, accomplishing so much with a style uniquely his own,” Red Sox owner John Henry said via statement. “But what truly set Luis apart was his zest for life, embracing every moment with an infectious spirit, even in the face of his many challenges. He channeled everything into his love for the game and the people around him. He was magnetic and had a smile that could light up Fenway Park. Luis was truly one of a kind and all of us at the Red Sox will miss him .”

Report: Orioles expected to increase payroll in 2025

Luis Tiant was a great pitcher back in the day and should be remembered as such. The world lost a great athlete today but an even better man.
