ENGLEWOOD — The Democratic Women’s Club of Charlotte County announced the recipient of its 2024 Betty Gissendanner Memorial Scholarship is Lemon Bay High School senior Madeleine Googins, of Placida.

"Madeleine is an all-around scholar athlete and citizen of her school community," a news release stated.

She is taking college-level courses and is involved in seven school clubs, an officer in three of them, and is a two-sport varsity athlete, it noted.

"Madeleine has reached these levels of achievement despite her family experiencing dire housing and business circumstances after Hurricane Ian," it stated.

Googins plans to attend the University of Central Florida.

A reception will be held for Googins at 2:30 p.m. Monday, May 20 at the Punta Gorda Library, 401 Shreve St. in Punta Gorda. For more information about the reception, email dwcofcharlottecounty@gmail.com.

The scholarship is awarded to women graduating from a Charlotte County high school and are pre-registered as Democrats.
