ENGLEWOOD — The Literacy Center for Dyslexia is planning a training for teachers and administrators in Charlotte and Sarasota County.

"The Science of Reading & Fundamentals Training" will be free, and professional development points will be awarded. The program is made possible by a grant from the Suncoast Credit Union Foundation called the Community and Engagement Project.

It's set for 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. June 4 at The Literacy Center for Dyslexia, 2961 Placida Road, Suite 11, Englewood

“We believe that every child deserves the opportunity to receive a proper and thorough eduction, even if adjustments are needed, such as trainings like this, to meet their unique needs,” said Kourtney Berry, Executive Director, Suncoast Credit Union Foundation. “Learning how to read at a young age is essential, as it teaches critical thinking and comprehension skills, which benefit children in all areas of their lives.”

Training content: Science of Reading Training and Presentation of a Tier 1 and/or Tier 2 Curriculum for classroom use for struggling readers.

Teachers will learn tips and tricks for incorporating engaging phonics activities using an explicit, systematic and multi-sensory approach to intervention. They will also learn proactive strategies for beginning readers that will offer a strong literacy foundation for all students in grades K-2.
