NORTH PORT — Mitch Guerrero won a sand-sculpting tournament in Michigan for the second consecutive time Sunday.

Similarly to last time out, he was awarded the first-place prize as well as the sculptors choice award at the Blue Water SandFest in Port Huron, Michigan.

The title of his design was “Cracked Pot City — Home of the Mice.”

“We changed the title slightly,” Guerrero said. “To match what the crowd called a mouse instead of a rat.”

Guerrero, a North Port resident, is a full time sculptor who left his desk job to pursue his passion.

He was previously a web developer who sculpted on the weekends. Now, however, it is his profession.

He also offers sand sculpting lessons at Siesta Key and frequently competes in tournaments across the country.

Guerrero is thrilled to have won yet again. But his focus is now on future tournaments, as well as paid jobs he does for-hire, and instructions he gives.

He is looking forward to competing in the National Championships in Fort Myers, but they have not yet sent any invitations for Pro-Am sculptors. Therefore, he is not sure he’ll be invited.

“Other that that,” Guerrero said. “I’m just looking forward to paid sand-sculpting jobs for whoever wants a unique art form to feature or promote their business. I’m also hoping to figure out what I can do with the proprietary process of capturing, and 3-D printing objects with high detail outside of the sculpting world. I know there are more applications for this process, it’s just a matter of finding them.”
