Two killed; portions of U.S. 41 closed after crash

SOUTH VENICE — A portion of U.S. 41/Tamiami Trail is closed after a severe crash at the intersection of East Seminole drive.

The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office is assisting Florida Highway Patrol with the investigation, according to a news release from the Sheriff's Office.

Authorities confirmed two people were killed in the wreck.

It happened at 1:26 p.m. Sunday.

"One northbound lane of S. Tamiami Trail remains open," it stated. "All southbound lanes are open. The road will remain closed for several hours, until the investigation is completed."

The news release asked motorists to avoid the area and seek alternative routes.
