PORT CHARLOTTE – Charlotte County officials closed the southbound U.S. 41 bridge over the Peace River until further notice due to road flooding in Punta Gorda, according to a news release from Charlotte County on Thursday night.

The northbound bridge was closed earlier Thursday, and remained closed Thursday night.

Drivers are asked to take the Interstate 75 bridges as alternate ways to cross the Peace River.

Storm surge, high tides and rainfall from Hurricane Helene have caused widespread localized flooding, particularly in coastal areas including Punta Gorda, Charlotte Harbor, El Jobean and Englewood.

These conditions will continue to worsen Thursday night.

Residents and visitors who don't need to travel are asked to remain at home and not drive on roadways.

"Charlotte County reminds motorists to remain alert at all times and to exercise caution when traveling. Travelers are encouraged not to drive through roadways that are underwater and find an alternate route. Remember, turn around, don’t drown," the notice states.

More than a dozen roads are closed in Punta Gorda due to flooding, and more in other areas of the county.

The view a list of road closures, visit www.CharlotteCountyFL.gov/storm, or see below.
