VENICE — Venice Theatre presents the powerful and emotionally charged play “Agnes of God,” written by John Pielmeier.

This drama that delves deep into psychological tension and spiritual conflict, explores themes of faith, science and the complexities of the human spirit, will be performed in Venice Theatre’s Pinkerton Theatre through Oct. 20, according to a news release.

“Agnes of God” tells the gripping story of a young novice nun, Agnes, who is accused of infanticide after a newborn baby is found dead in a convent, the news release explains. Caught between the clash of religion and psychology, the play centers on the investigation led by Dr. Martha Livingstone, a court-appointed psychiatrist, who must determine whether Agnes is fit to stand trial. Through the opposing views of the skeptical psychiatrist and the protective Mother Superior, the mystery of Agnes’ faith and the truth of the baby’s death unravel in an emotional, heart-wrenching journey.

Directed by Alyssa Goudy, the lead roles will be performed by Shannon Maloney as Agnes, Vera Samuels as Dr. Martha Livingstone, and Lynne Doyle as Mother Miriam Ruth. Ali Wasmund is understudy for Agnes, Eve Caballero for Dr. Livingstone, and Pam Hayes for Mother Miriam Ruth. Understudy performances are scheduled for Oct. 13, 18, with Ali Wasmund also performing on Oct. 17.

Goudy commented in the news release, “’Agnes of God’ raises profound questions about belief, innocence and the nature of truth. It’s a play that stays with you long after the final curtain falls, and we are excited to bring this powerful narrative to life.”

The production design, featuring a minimalist set transports the audience into the cloistered and introspective world of the convent, heightening the tension and mystery that drives the plot, according to a news release. Scenic Designer Tim Wisgerhof and Lighting Designer John Michael Andulis have worked closely to create a visual atmosphere that is as haunting as it is beautiful.
