VERMILLION, S.D. (KCAU) — The 84th Sturgis Motorcycle Rally kicked off Friday. With roughly half a million people expected to attend the event, traffic safety is extra important.

Bikers are coming from all over the country to head to the largest motorcycle rally in the world. While you might not be riding a motorcycle yourself this weekend, you will see more on Siouxland roadways.

84th Sturgis Rally: What to know

“You see a spike in motorcycle traffic this time of year with the Sturgis rally going on,” Bryce Finnegan with the South Dakota Highway Patrol said. “We see it all across the state from down here in the southeast portion of the state and then over there in Sturgis and Rapid City.”

A spike in traffic that means a higher chance of accidents. In fact, there have already have been five involving motorcyclists so far in 2024. If you do plan to ride, think safety over fashion.

“Be aware of your surroundings,” Finnegan said. “Plan your trip ahead, wear safety equipment. Be aware of the weather. Try to wear something bright while you’re riding your motorcycle so people can see you. I always suggest wearing a helmet, safety glasses, leather jacket if the weather allows you to.”

While the rally is the destination for many, two bikers told KCAU 9 that they took this time to sightsee from their bikes.

“We’ve seen everything,” motorcyclist Steve Stanfield said. “We’ve seen the Badlands, Mount Rushmore, you name it. Crazy Horse, probably Montana and Wyoming.”

“I usually see a lot of buffalo, prairie dogs, antelope,” a motorcyclist named Bud said.

It’s always a good idea to check your surroundings while you’re driving a car. If you do plan to head to Sturgis this weekend, officials say to be extra cautious.

“Just be patient,” Finnegan said. “Expect a high increase in traffic and with that traffic, obviously, more motorcycles. So just be aware. Check your blind spots.”

The rally continues until August 11, so there is still plenty of time to attend if you aren’t already on your way.
