Two candidates are running for Vermont’s At-Large U.S. House seat—the fewest since 2016

This year’s filing deadline for candidates running for Congress in Vermont was May 30, 2024.

Two candidates are running for Vermont’s one U.S. House district—one Democrat and one Republican. Seven candidates ran in 2022, six candidates ran in 2020, and five ran in 2018.

Here are some other highlights from this year’s filings:

• The number of candidates running for the U.S. House in Vermont in 2024 is also the fewest since 2016 when one candidate ran.

• Vermont’s At-Large Congressional District is not open this year because incumbent Rep. Becca Balint (D) is running for re-election. The only election year that the district was open in the last 10 years was 2022.
• Neither the Democratic nor Republican primaries are contested this year. The last time both primaries were uncontested was in 2016.
• Candidates filed to run in the Republican and Democratic primaries, meaning the seat is not guaranteed to either party.

Vermont and three other states—Connecticut, Minnesota, and Wisconsin—are holding primary elections on August 13.

In Vermont, the winner of a primary election is the candidate who receives the highest number of votes cast even if they do not win an outright majority.
