VERNON ( KFDX/KJTL ) — When you think of the Fourth of July, three things come to mind: barbeque, the American flag and fireworks.

Unfortunately, the City of Vernon will be without its annual fireworks show due to extreme heat and dry conditions, according to Mayor Pam Gosline.

“We moved the location this year from where we’ve normally had it to Orbison Park, and with Mother Nature, the weather conditions changed on us so fast. The heat and the dry conditions. After much consideration and much discussion with the fire chief, he just really recommended that this year we shouldn’t have it,” Gosline said.

Though disappointed, many residents agree with this decision, saying that if it will keep people safe, then it’s the right move.

Due to this postponement, Mayor Gosline wants to emphasize that the city does not allow public use of fireworks, explaining that safety is the main concern.

“I’ll tell you why; people just don’t understand that it just takes one small ember. I was just watching Channel 3 News a while ago, and y’all had a segment on there about fireworks and an ember going into a gutter that was filled with leaves. It started a fire,” Gosline said. “You know, I enjoy fireworks. I was a kid. My grandchildren love fireworks, but you just have to have the right location.”

The city does not have a date set for when the show will actually take place, but Gosline assured that it will happen.
