VERO BEACH — An opportunity for local pilots and flight attendants to work for Breeze Airways out of Vero Beach Regional Airport is expected to begin in the fall.

The Cottonwood Heights, Utah-based airline plans on opening a crew base Oct. 1. Some of those stationed at the airport could be local.

"As we continue to grow from Vero Beach to five destinations with the addition of New York/Stewart, we're going to be making Vero Beach Regional Airport a crew base in October," said Breeze spokesperson Gareth Edmondson-Jones. "That means we'll start hiring pilots and flight attendants locally and overnighting an aircraft at the airport from Oct 1.

"I do not know how many people we'll hire, or when we'll begin hiring. But, it will be in place by October."

Implementation of a crew base comes on the heels of the addition of Stewart International Airport in Newburgh, New York, and doubling flights to Islip, New York from the airport on July 10.

A crew base means that flights can now originate at the airport.

"A crew base means flights can start in Vero," said Edmondson-Jones. "Until now, planes were flying in and then out of Vero Beach airport. With a base, the first flight in the morning can be out of Vero Beach."

    Airport Director Todd Scher agrees.

"It shows they are really invested in the area," said Scher. "It gives Breeze flexibility, and flights can now originate at our airport."

Service to Newburgh, north of Manhattan, is to launch Thursdays and Sundays beginning Nov. 21.

Between Vero Beach and Islip, Breeze plans flights four times per week beginning Oct. 2. Along with Monday and Friday flights, Breeze has scheduled Wednesday and Saturday service.

Breeze began operating in Vero Beach in early 2023. The airline was founded in 2021, with its inaugural flight from Tampa to Charleston, South Carolina.
