5 displaced in Vero Beach motel room fire; 2 taken to hospital

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY− Five people were displaced and two taken to a hospital for smoke inhalation concerns after a fire was reported in a room at a motel in Vero Beach Tuesday afternoon, fire rescue officials said.

Power outage: The adult occupants and one child in a total of three rooms were displaced after power was cut to a wing of the Vero Motel in the emergency response to the call of a fire just after 1 p.m., an Indian River County Fire Rescue official said.

Investigation: There were no flames or smoke showing when fire crews arrived because of efforts of bystanders and police who first arrived to the motel room in the 3100 block of U.S. 1, said Battalion Chief Chris Gruwell. The cause of the fire is under investigation by state fire marshals.

Precaution: The man and woman who were occupants of the smoke-filled room were taken by ambulance to HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital in Fort Pierce for precautions due to possible smoke inhalation. Both were awake and talking to emergency personnel, said Gruwell.
