A Treasure Coast Sheriff is sharing more details about what led to a deadly deputy-involved shooting on Sunday night.

Eric Flowers says one of his deputies was leaving a call when he heard a commotion coming from a RaceTrac gas station in Vero Beach. He says 42-year old Jeffrey Lee Miller tried to stab the deputy as soon as he got out of his cruiser.

"The guy was chasing two other guys around in the parking lot. Those guys had fled from him."

After moving out of Miller's way, Flowers says the man continued to come after him. That's when the deputy fired his gun and killed the suspect. The incident was caught on both body cam and surveillance video .

Flowers says his training and response kicked in perfectly and that he is "incredibly proud" of the unnamed deputy. "All the things that we're trained to do, he did right. In 3 and a half seconds, he made that decision...less than 3 and a half seconds."

The sheriff says Miller had an extensive criminal record, a gang affiliation and Nazi tattoos.

The deputy is on paid administrative leave, which is standard protocol.
