Girls basketball: Verona camp draws 200 players
The Verona youth girls basketball camp was a hot ticket last week. The basketball camp sponsored by Verona girls basketball coach Lexy Richardson and Wildcat players drew 200 participants from kindergarten through eighth grade. The camp ran from Monday, June 17 to Thursday, June 20, at the fieldhouse at Verona Area High School.
2025 cornerback Tre Poteat commits to Tennessee
2025 cornerback prospect Tre Poteat committed to Tennessee on Tuesday. He’s the Vols fourth commit to 2025 class in less than a week. “110% committed,” Poteat said. The 6-foot-1, 175-pound three-star cornerback is from Verona Area High School in Verona, Wisconsin. Poteat ranks as the No. 545 overall player in the class of 2025. He also ranks as the No. 48 cornerback and No. 4 player in Wisconsin. Poteat officially visited Tennessee on June 21. Poteat is the son to former Pitt and Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Hank Poteat. Dane Co. Judge issues temporary order allowing email absentee voting for disabled voters
Dane County Judge Everett Mitchell issued a temporary injunction Tuesday that will allow voters with “print disabilities” to cast absentee ballots by email. Mitchell’s order came in a lawsuit brought by Disability Rights Wisconsin, the League of Women Voters of Wisconsin and four voters with disabilities. The lawsuit alleges that the current absentee voting system discriminates against voters with disabilities such as blindness because they can’t cast their ballots without assistance under the current rules, violating the right to cast a secret ballot.

The Wisconsin tornado count from last weekend is now at eight, following National Weather Service surveys that completed on Monday afternoon. The eight tornadoes came on Saturday as part of a severe weather system that dumped rain across the state and left over 10,000 without power for a time. The severe weather also closed roads due to downed powerlines and dumped more than 5 inches of rain in some areas.

College catch-up: Adam Slager slated for big role with Marquette lacrosse
Resume: 2022 Stoughton High School graduate and faceoff specialist Adam Slager posted a .558 faceoff percentage (43-of-77) in his redshirt freshman season with the Marquette men’s lacrosse team. Slager also added 22 ground balls and had one assist for the Golden Eagles. He played behind fellow faceoff specialist and graduate student Luke Williams, who was a All-Big East second-team selection. Slager is expected to serve as the Golden Eagles’ top faceoff specialist next season.

Basketball coaches at Stoughton are proponents of the shot clock and were disappointed when the WIAA rejected implementing it for nonconference games in the 2025-26 season. The WIAA Board of Control voted 6-4 against using a proposal for a 35-second shot clock during the 2025-26 season for nonconference games if both teams agreed to it.

MADISON – The Wisconsin women’s basketball team rounded out its roster for the upcoming season with a point guard. On Wednesday, coach Marisa Moseley announced the signing of Alba Martin Mesa, a 5-foot-6 freshman point guard from Spain. She comes to UW from SPAR Gran Canaria, where she averaged 14 points, six assists and three steals per game last season.
